With that many people taking to the sport, it’s no wonder that stand-up paddleboards (sometimes referred to as longboards) have become so popular. But growth brings its challenges. Like all new things, SUPs are expensive and there is a lot of choice available. Along with the usual concerns about fit, function and durability you also need to make sure that any SUP that you get will be suitable for your conditions and location.

Paddleboarding is becoming more and more popular in the UK. However, due to the warmer water temperatures, paddleboarders often wear rash vests as opposed to wet suits. You might think a wetsuit is just for divers and surfers, but paddleboarding requires a wetsuit too. Luckily, there are a lot of benefits to wearing one.

Paddleboarding is a fun

Enjoyable sport for anyone to participate in, but it has its hazards too. You need to educate yourself about these additional things, like how to dress for the sport. When it’s a new activity, most people don’t know what clothing or accessories would be ideal to use. Have you ever wondered if you need a wetsuit for paddleboarding and what the advantages are?

Cold water can be brutal to fight against. Especially when you are participating in water sports such as paddleboarding. Wetsuits are often used in cold water paddling and swimming, while also providing you with more protection against the impacts of a fall into the water. Wetsuits have similar buoyancy to that of a life jacket which means that whether dry or wet, your body will float, reducing the risk of drowning.

The water temperature may be relatively low by UK standards, but temperatures can change quickly, especially in our choppy, windy waters. In the UK there is hardly ever any shade on the beach and it isn’t unheard of for there to be a northerly breeze blowing which tends to make things colder. There are two seasons when it is essential that you wear either a wet suit or drysuit. The first is from April through May when we have an unseasonably warm spring period with average temperatures reaching 18°C . The water however is still chilly at 8°C and if you’re like me and enjoy winter swimming then wearing an (inexpensive) wetsuit will allow you to extend your season into summer.

Paddleboarding is a growing water sport in the UK for both professionals and amateurs. Even though it appears to be a very gentle sport, that is not necessarily true. Paddleboarding can be just as dangerous as surfing, especially when you think of the people who wear no wetsuits or rash guards. The reality show “ruining forever” on MTV has featured some of the dangers involved with paddleboarding including salt water and freezing temps.

You don’t have to be a pro to have the best paddleboarding experience. Try out a wetsuit. You’ll never look back.
